Several Democratic senators withheld their backing Tuesday as party leaders tried to nail down support from moderates for the government to sell insurance in competition with private companies as part of a sweeping health overhaul bill. Across the Capitol, Democratic leaders in the House were working to finalize the shape of a government insurance option in their version of the legislation, with many saying the effort got a boost from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's decision to include a public plan in the Senate measure. Leaders in both chambers were having trouble with a handful of wavering lawmakers, especially in the Senate where objections from one member can bring action to a halt. The first order of business for Reid was to convince senators to vote in favor of a procedural motion to allow debate on the health care bill to begin, and he urged his colleagues during a weekly lunch to do so, saying they could raise objections and criticism during the debate itself.

It's still not clear whether all the deaths were caused by swine flu, but the news has sparked panic, and people have started wearing masks across the country. Appeal for calm The Ukrainian health minister Vasyl Knyazevych has asked the media only to report the comments of medical experts following a series of misleading reports which fuelled public anxiety. On national television, he said Ukraine had the same problems as the rest of the world. He also called on fellow politicians to give people 'a week of silence,' and said there was no need for panic. However, his calls may already be too late.

The HA sequence had D225G, adding to the evidence for spread of the polymorphism which has been linked to case fatality rates of 100% in several countries. Although there was not information on the stats of the patient, the sample was collected in October, when the rate of fatalities in India was accelerating

01/14/10 - Caracal Cluster Pandemic Panic Likely Linked to D225G -- January 13, 2010 Olt is out of influenza vaccine, hundreds of people being vaccinated in the last two days by family physicians. General hysteria was fueled in Olt recorded influenza death last Sunday, that of women 42 years of Caracal, future in-law of the young for 21 years who died in the same case. "The woman and young man who was to be my son fell ill during the same period. None suffered from other diseases, but the evolution of influenza in November was bad from both patients, "explained Dr. Marinela Madan, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Health (DPH) River. The above translation describes the run on H1N1 pandemic vaccines in Olt County, Romania after news on the Caracal cluster spread (see map). In addition to the two fatal cases, the women's daughter had been hospitalized and her husband had had symptoms. The above translation refers to the evolution of the virus, which likely refers to the D225G/N changes in adjacent Ukraine. Although the media has referred to these changes as the "Norway mutation", the country reporting the largest number of fatal cases was Ukraine. Mill Hill released sequences on four fatalities and all had D225G, which was followed by two likely fatalities which had D225N, and the in November sequence from patients in and around Kyiv had both D225G and D225N in the same lung samples.

06/16/09 - 2008 confirmed rise in weather disasters-Red Cross -- By Patrick Worsnip -- UNITED NATIONS, June 16 (Reuters) - A global trend towards increasing weather-related disasters was confirmed in 2008, the second deadliest year in the past decade for natural catastrophes, an annual Red Cross report said on Tuesday. The number of people reported killed by natural disasters last year -- a total of 235,736 -- was surpassed only in 2004, the year of the Indian Ocean tsunami, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The only alignment I wish to make for myself is with freedom, liberty, and a basic respect for the Constitution. Let me begin by saying that I am actually quite open to the idea of a single payer healthcare system here in the United States. I have heard proposals that I believe could achieve the goal of healthcare for every American without raising taxes and without the Federal or State governments being involved in the doctor -patient decision-making process. Of course, these proposals have been scrapped and ignored from the very beginning. But, as I say that I am open to the single payer system, it may surprise many that I am opposed to the current healthcare bill generating so much debate around the country. So, let me explain myself.

The WHO has carried out a 10-year study that has evidence that heavy mobile users have a higher risk of developing brain tumours later in life, reports the Daily Telegraph. The results of the ?20m study are expected to be published. Elisabeth Cardis, who heads the report team, said, "In the absence of definitive results and in the light of a number of studies which, though limited, suggest a possible effect of radio frequency radiation, precautions are important."

Here's a finding that'll make your skin crawl: A healthy human epidermis is colonized by roughly 1,000 species of bacteria. Furthermore, the microorganisms have evolved to exploit the unique attributes of those body parts they call home, according to a study to be published Friday in the journal Science. Some thrive in the desert of the forearm. Others are happiest in the tropical rain forest of the armpit. The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the National Institutes of Health, reflects a growing realization that bacteria have colonized us inside and out -- and that their presence is not only harmless but also probably essential to the proper functioning of the body.

The team last year reported success with three adult patients, an achievement that was hailed as a major accomplishment for gene therapy. They have now treated an additional nine patients, including five children, and find that the best results are achieved in the youngest patients, whose defective retinal cells have not had time to die off.

 05/26/09 - Gum Disease, Heart Disease Share Genetic Link -- TUESDAY, May 26 (HealthDay News) -- A genetic link between gum disease (periodontitis) and heart disease has been discovered by German scientists. "We studied a genetic locus on chromosome 9p21.3 that had previously been identified to be associated with myocardial infarction [heart attack], in a group of 151 patients suffering from the most aggressive, early-onset forms of periodontitis, and a group of 1,097 CHD patients who had already had a heart attack. The genetic variation associated with the clinical pictures of both diseases was identical," Dr. Arne Schaefer said in a European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) news release.
