06/18/09 - Health Buzz: Asbestos Health Emergency and Other Health News -- EPA Declares Public Health Emergency A fter Montana Mine Poisons Locals -- The Environmental Protection Agency declared its first ever public health emergency yesterday in a Montana community where residents were poisoned by asbestos from a nearby mine, the Associated Press reports. At least $125 million over the next five years will go toward cleaning up the town of Libby, where local miners wearing contaminated clothes and shoes unknowingly tracked asbestos from the mine into their homes. Another $6 million of federal grant money will go toward medical care for an estimated 500 people with asbestos-related illnesses. Those include residents of another town, Troy, Mont., who've also developed illnesses like lung cancer and asbestosis, the Washington Post reports. More than 200 people have died from asbestos poisoning linked to the mine, which is now closed, according to AP.

06/22/09 - Pandemic Reality Check -- What Can Be Done -- and What Can't -- To Protect Against H1N1 -- By John M. Barry -- This month, the World Health Organization finally declared that the new H1N1 virus has become pandemic. Yesterday it reported a big jump in cases and fatalities since Friday. How many people this virus will sicken and kill depends, ultimately, on three things: the virus itself; the impact of what are known as "non-pharmaceutical interventions," or NPIs; and the availability and effectiveness of a vaccine. The virus will be the most important factor. Influenza is one of the fastest-mutating organisms in existence, which makes it unpredictable, and a virus newly infecting the human population is likely to be even more unpredictable as it adapts to a new environment. There have been four pandemics that we know about in some detail: 1889-92, 1918-20, 1957-60 and 1968-70. All four followed similar patterns: initial sporadic activity with local instances of high attack rates -- just as H1N1 has behaved so far -- followed four to eight months later by waves of widespread illness with 20 to 40 percent of the population sickened. (In a normal influenza season about 10 percent of the population gets sick.) Subsequent waves followed as well.

06/18/09 - Health workers not protecting themselves from flu -- CHICAGO, June 18 (Reuters) - Half of the doctors, nurses and other health workers who have become sick with the new H1N1 swine flu got it on the job, suggesting they are not taking enough care to protect themselves, U.S. health officials said on Thursday. The World Health Organization has classified the H1N1 swine flu as a pandemic. So far, most infections have been mild, but the WHO has said the virus could change at any time to a more dangerous form.

06/09/09 - Vegetarian Atkins diet lowers heart risks - study -- CHICAGO, June 8 (Reuters) - A vegetarian version of the Atkins low-carb diet may help people lose weight and lower levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, Canadian researchers said on Monday. A small, month-long study of the so-called Eco-Atkins diet, which stresses plant proteins, worked better than a high-carb diet at reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein or LDL, which raises the risks of heart attacks and strokes.

Kirk wants tougher penalties for super pot -- CHICAGO - Congressman Mark Kirk and law enforcement officials say tougher drug penalties are needed to combat the high-potency marijuana that's hitting the streets. Kirk announced a bill Monday that targets drug dealers caught with the powerful pot called "kush." It would impose stiffer penalties than if dealers are caught with regular marijuana.

Inc. (MRK) manufacturing shortage. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday it's reinstating the booster shots for children ages 12 to 15 months because supplies of Sanofi-Aventis SA's (SNY) meningitis vaccine products will increase beginning in July.

06/15/09 - Obesity ops 'raise fracture risk' -- People who have obesity operations, such as gastric bypasses or banding, double their risk of suffering fractures, US research suggests. Researchers for the Mayo Clinic in the US reviewed nearly 100 surgical cases spanning 21 years for their study. They found a fifth of patients suffered fractures - twice the rate typical for their age - with most breaks occurring in the bones of the hands and feet.

06/18/09 - Team homes in on genetic causes of neuroblastoma -- By Julie Steenhuysen -- CHICAGO (Reuters) - A missing stretch of DNA on a chromosome involved in nervous system development may help explain why some children are predisposed to a deadly type of tumor called neuroblastoma, researchers reported on Wednesday. The study is the first to show that repeats or deletions of a genetic sequence, as opposed to "spelling mistakes" in the four-letter genetic code -- influence cancer risk, said Dr. John Maris of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, whose study appears in the journal Nature.
