06/09/09 - China starts batch production of A/H1N1 vaccine -- A researcher with Sinovac Biotech Company begins preparation work for producing A/H1N1 influenza vaccine for human use with the seed lot of flu virus "NYMCX-179A". China received on Monday, June 8, 2009 the flu strain samples shipped from the United States, for the mass production of A/H1N1 influenza vaccine. Chinese drug companies are expected to have the vaccine produced by July. BEIJING, June 9 -- Sinovac Biotech Company, a vaccine-focused biotech company in China, started efforts to manufacture A/H1N1 influenza vaccine for human use on Monday, after it received the flu strain samples from the WHO, reported Beijing News Tuesday.

05/31/09 - Doctor Who Performed Abortions Is Shot to Death -- WICHITA, Kan. ? Authorities said they had a suspect in custody Sunday afternoon in the shooting death of George Tiller, a Wichita doctor who was one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions. Dr. Tiller, who had long been a lightning rod for controversy over the issue of abortion and had survived a shooting more than a decade ago, was shot inside his church here on Sunday morning, the authorities said. Dr. Tiller, 67, was shot with a handgun inside the lobby of his longtime church, Reformation Lutheran Church on the city?s East Side, just after 10 a.m. (Central Time). The service had started minutes earlier.

05/31/09 - Anti-abortion outcry as Obama heads to Catholic university -- By Mira Oberman, Agence France-Presse -- SOUTH BEND, Indiana -- President Barack Obama waded into an impassioned outcry from anti-abortion campaigners as he prepared to speak Sunday at one of America?s most prestigious Catholic universities. Obama was to deliver the commencement address for graduating students and receive a honorary degree at the University of Notre Dame, pitting him headlong into the nation?s culture wars on an issue that he has tried hard to finesse.

05/29/09 - Warning Signs That Flu Is Serious -- By Denise Grady -- How do you know when swine flu has turned serious? Today, doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explained what flu warning signs warrant urgent medical attention. Dr. Anne Schuchat, the C.D.C.?s interim deputy director for science and public health, said that in the United States, 507 people have been hospitalized because of swine flu. She noted that people over 55 account for only 1 percent of cases, and 62 percent of the people getting sick are from 5 to 24 years old.

05/27/09 - Harsanyi: Abortion debate changing -- By David Harsanyi -- As an atheist and a secular kinda guy, I practice moral relativism regularly. Still, I've always struggled mightily with the ethics and politics of abortion. Apparently, I'm not alone. A new Gallup poll claims that for the first time since 1995, when the question was first asked by the organization, most Americans consider themselves to be "pro-life" rather than "pro-choice." The straightforward question asked of participants was this: "With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life?" Fifty-one percent responded that they were pro-life and 42 percent said they were pro-choice. These percentages are the reverse found in the same poll in 2006.

05/27/09 - Swiftwater drug maker Sanofi Pasteur preps for swine-flu vaccine production -- By David Falchek (Staff Writer) -- As a potential pandemic looms, the nation and world are turning to Sanofi Pasteur in Swiftwater to stem the spread of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration's approval for Sanofi Pasteur's new $150 million vaccine production facility in May could not have been more timely as concerns mount over the particularly virulent H1N1 virus. That new facility, with the capacity to make 100 million doses annually, will be broken in this year in H1N1 vaccine production.

05/27/09 - How swine flu kills -- by Michael Scott Leonard -- When the Illinois Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that a suburban Cook County resident had become the state?s second swine flu fatality, and the country?s 15th, the reports mentioned that the patient had suffered from ?underlying conditions? and died after ?complications.? But officials declined to specify the precise nature of either. Statements after the state?s first death from H1N1 influenza, reported on Monday, and those accompanying most of the country?s 15 swine flu deaths have been similarly vague.

For the past 37 years, Kathy Grinter has fought to have her son's death recognised as a death from fluoride poisoning in an effort to warn the public of the possible dangers. 05/23/09 - A-H1N1 Synthetic Flu -- By Wayne Madsen -- (WMR) -- The World Health Organization (WHO), after indicating it was prepared to raise the AH1N1 pandemic flu alert to Level 6, the agency's highest alert level, has now succumbed to political pressure from Britain, Japan, China, and other nations led by corporate-beholden governments to keep the alert level at Level 5. The nations opposed to a Level 6 alert argue that H1N1 should not be considered by the rate at which it is spreading but by how deadly it is. WMR has also learned that New York's Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Thomas Frieden, has been downplaying the threat from H1N1, even though the flu has claimed the life of an assistant principal of a public school in Queens. Ominously, the Obama administration has named Frieden to be the administrator of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Political considerations by the White House, Gracie Mansion, and WHO headquarters in Geneva are overshadowing what could be a more deadly follow-on pandemic, according to an influenza research scientist who has been in contact with WMR.

05/14/09 - Late Term Abortion...America Doesn't Torture? -- By Carol McDowwell -- To The Editor: In President Obama's first 100-days news conference, he restated that he wants to pass the "Freedom of Choice Act." This legislation would take away a state's right to decide its own position on practices such as late-term or partial birth abortions. A nurse who formerly worked for a doctor who practiced all forms of abortions described partial birth abortion as a procedure, which actually takes three visits to complete. On the last visit, the doctor turns the baby so it is face down and entering the birth canal feet first. The baby is then carefully pulled out so just the base of the skull is exposed ? any further would risk a live birth. A needle-like instrument is then inserted at the base of the skull and "scrambles" the brain, which is then sucked out making the skull easier to crush. Once this is done, the baby is completely removed and disposed of.
