Opioid Prescribing Will Be Supervised Within the Year, Say Officials
Allison Gandey
May 10, 2010 (Baltimore, Maryland) — The US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) controversial opioid risk evaluation and mitigation strategies, known as REMS, are in the final stages of development and could be ready this summer.
The plan will alter the prescribing landscape for opioid therapies and is expected to have important implications for clinicians, the patients who use these drugs, and the companies that make them.
The agency has yet to release details about the new plan, but this weekend Bob Rappaport, MD, from the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research hinted it will include mandatory education.

Avandia and FDA Both Subject of Severe Criticism at Congressional Hearing
Sue Hughes
May 11, 2010 (Washington DC) — Both the diabetes drug rosiglitazone (Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline) and the way the FDA has handled concerns about it took another severe battering at a recent US Congressional hearing of the committee that has jurisdiction over the FDA.
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies met on April 28 to discuss the report on rosiglitazone released in February by the Committee on Finance of the US Senate.
The report [1], by Sens Max Baucus (D-MT) Charles Grassley (R-IA), concluded that there are "serious health risks associated with Avandia." It also criticized the structure of the FDA, particularly the fact that those who make decisions about drug approvals are the same experts who must later oversee drug safety.

04/17/10 - The FDA Shuts Down Common Infant Vaccine After Startling Discovery - Posted by Dr. Mercola | April 17 2010 - ?U.S. federal health authorities recommended ? that doctors suspend using Rotarix, one of two vaccines licensed in the U.S. against rotavirus, saying the vaccine is contaminated with material from a pig virus,? CNN reports. The Rotarix vaccine, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline and was approved by the FDA in 2008, has already been given to about 1 million U.S. children along with 30 million worldwide. The vaccine was found to contain DNA from porcine circovirus 1. ?The FDA learned about the contamination after an academic research team using a novel technique to look for viruses in a range of vaccines found the material in GlaxoSmithKline's product and told the company,? FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told CNN.

10/27/09 - Senate Dems short votes for health bill _ for now By ERICA WERNER (AP) ? 51 minutes ago WASHINGTON ? Several Democratic senators withheld their backing Tuesday as party leaders tried to nail down support from moderates for the government to sell insurance in competition with private companies as part of a sweeping health overhaul bill. Across the Capitol, Democratic leaders in the House were working to finalize the shape of a government insurance option in their version of the legislation, with many saying the effort got a boost from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's decision to include a public plan in the Senate measure. Leaders in both chambers were having trouble with a handful of wavering lawmakers, especially in the Senate where objections from one member can bring action to a halt. The first order of business for Reid was to convince senators to vote in favor of a procedural motion to allow debate on the health care bill to begin, and he urged his colleagues during a weekly lunch to do so, saying they could raise objections and criticism during the debate itself.

10/21/09 - Geographically Confined October 13, 2009 ? 53 Comments Janet ?Pat? Napolitano our intrepid Homeland Security Secretary, went out on her own little ?get their minds off of Obama?s health scam? tour last weekend. Napolitano did what all liberals do instinctively, she used a vast number of words to say as little as possible.. Her discourse ran the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous. In ?Napolitano Says Al-Qaeda-Style Terrorists Are in U.S. (Bloomberg.com) we read that during an interview with Bloomberg television, Napolitano said, ?There are individuals in the Unites States who ascribe to al-Qaeda-type beliefs..? What a sagacious soothsayer Napolitano is.. If you just counted the liberals alone with their politics of ?target America first?, there are easily multiple millions here that fall into that category and that?s before you get around to tabulating the Muslims. Have no fear, Napolitano says that ?law-enforcement authorities are tracking terrorists with al-Qaeda leanings in the U.S.? Killing them is much more palatable than ?tracking? them. Fattening them up at Guantanamo and then releasing them back into the wild just delays the inevitable. Playing progressive patty-cake with them accomplishes nothing. When it comes to the liberals and their declared ?War on The War on Terror?, accomplishing nothing is what they are all about.

06/18/09 - The Nazi Euthanasia Program: Forerunner of Obama's Death Council -- by Anton Chaitkin -- At his trial in front of the American National Military Tribunal in 1947, Karl Brandt, Hitler's escort physician and later a leading euthanasia operative, testified that, sometime in 1935, Hitler had informed Reich Health Leader Gerhard Wagner of his intention to implement euthanasia of the mentally disabled once war had begun. According to Brandt, Hitler believed the opposition to euthanasia from church circles would be less pronounced during war than in peacetime ?Michael S.
